Poverty and Lack of Education not the causes of terrorism

The man who captured Daniel Pearl (US journalist murdered in Pakistan), Ahmed Omar Sheikh, attended a UK public school and the L.S.E. He was a highly educated British Pakistani, yet he was associated with al-Qaeda and Harkat ul-Mujahideen.

cf. also the 9/11 leader, M. Atah, who was well educated and from a wealthy background.

Neither were clearly well educated with regards to Islam and its teachings. Moreover, there are always exceptions to the rule. By and large, those who perpetrate violence are usually those who have grown up in xenophobic surroundings, suspicious of any education beyond what their particular leaders are foisting upon them.

Also, no one seriously believes that a lack of education is the only cause for terrorism or violence. A lack of education, however, IS a problem. Unfortunately, it is one that western Christians often suffer from as well… as we all too often fear what we do not know or understand. I wonder when fundamentalist Christians will learn to trust Love rather than Fear (Fear is that big, wide road leading to destruction, I think).

They were educated enough to read and act upon Surah 9.29

Fight those who believe not in God and the Last Day and do not forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden — such men as practise not the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book — until they pay the tribute out of hand and have been humbled.

and perhaps the Hadith of Bukhari:

‘know that paradise lies under the shade of swords.’
