…and yet, Oliver Tambo (a dedicated ANC activist and law partner with Mandela) was deeply religious and had for a long time considered the minsitry to be his calling.

Indeed, Bishop Tutu, Huddlestone and many other Christians were inveterate opponents of apartheid.

The truth is, the Bible can be used to justify slavery and apartheid – if you want to lend a spurious legitimacy to the things you want it to say. But this is the Bible as weapon, not authority. When the Bible is the authority it challenges apartheid and slavery (Wilberforce) because it brings a standard to bear that is above even one’s own culture.
