The need for government

August 4, 2009

In Australia there was looting after Cyclone Tracy (1974) and the Ash Wednesday bush fires (1983). But this is not a uniquely Australian phenomena.

After Hurricane Katrina (2005) there was looting and sexual assaults: With the attention of law enforcement personnel focused on rescue efforts, the security situation in New Orleans degraded quickly. By August 30, looting had spread throughout the city, often in broad daylight and in the presence of police officers. “The looting is out of control. The French Quarter has been attacked,” Councilwoman Jackie Clarkson said. “We’re using exhausted, scarce police to control looting when they should be used for search and rescue while we still have people on rooftops.” Looters reportedly included gangs of armed gunmen, and gunfire was heard in various parts of the city. Along with violent, armed robbery of non-essential valuable goods, the majority of incidents were of residents simply gathering food and water and other essential commodities from unstaffed grocery stores. Even police officers were involved with this form of looting.

The examples could be multiplied. The common cause? Without the fear of the police baton, evil men, or the worse instincts in men, will go unchecked. Government is ordianed of God for our good in a fallen world.
