The disastrous consequences of the prosperity gospel

November 24, 2012

I remember a West African pastor telling me that his congregaation had required his resignation because he was too poorly dressed. They had been deluded by the prosperity gospel teaching before he joined them and so they were convinced that if he was a real man of God, the Lord would have prospered him. He would have dressed better, driven a better car and lived at a higher standard than the rest of the congregation. They wanted that sort of ‘holy’ man as their pastor, although I knew he literally laboured night and day in care for them. But they were not going to contribute to his support – that had to be miraculous by pennies (or pounds) from heaven.
